Montgomery
Montgomeryโs history reaches back to the early 18th century, when the land was first granted in 1712 as a patent to Henry Wileman, the townโs first settler. Originally part of Ulster County, Montgomery passed through several administrative changes, beginning in the Shawangunk Precinct, later becoming part of the Wallkill Precinct, and known as Hanover Precinct by 1772. Renamed Montgomery Precinct in 1782 and officially Montgomery in 1788, the town remained in Ulster County until 1798, when it was incorporated into Orange County. Early census records from 1790 document a population that included both free individuals and enslaved people, reflecting the complex and layered history of the region.
